Unicorn Andromeda Shawl

Yay colors! Everyone needs a unicorn/cotton candy/bright and crazy project every once in a while 🙂

I bought the fiber for this project at a craft fair with no idea what I was going to do with it. I was trying really hard to be reasonable and buy only supplies for my upcoming project… but I just couldn’t help myself and this fiber made its way into my basket.

Unfortunately I don’t remember who I bought it from (it was some indie dyer in NZ) but I do remember the fiber is a rambouillet (type of sheep). I hadn’t worked with this type of fiber before, but I heard that it tends to yield yarn with a lot of bounce in it. Bounce means that the yarn will spring back into shape after being stretched. Curious to see what would happen, I started spinning.

I ended up with 495 yards of brightly colored 3-ply fingering weight yarn. It was indeed quite bouncy if not as soft as the merino I’ve worked with in the past. For such a fun yarn, I wanted to find a pattern that was both interesting and would properly show off the color transitions. I settled on Andromeda Galaxy Lace Shawl by Anna Victoria.

I chose to start with the purple in the center and move through the colors until the light teal on the very edges. I didn’t quite block the shawl evenly but it’s hardly noticeable. Overall the project turned out really well. I definitely would use the pattern again, especially for another gradient piece like this.
